Dermaplaning
What is it?
Dermaplaning is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that involves using a sterile surgical scalpel or specialized tool to gently remove dead skin cells and fine facial hair (often referred to as “peach fuzz”) from the surface of the skin. This process leaves the skin smoother, brighter, and more even in texture.
Benefits
- Exfoliation: Removes dead skin cells, helping to improve skin texture and promote cell turnover.
- Smoother Skin: Enhances the application of makeup and skincare products, as they can penetrate more effectively.
- Reduces Appearance of Fine Lines: Minimizes the look of fine lines and wrinkles over time with regular treatments.
- Improves Skin Tone: Brightens dull skin and can help with hyperpigmentation or minor scarring.
Who is it for?
- Suitable for most skin types, particularly those looking for a gentle exfoliation or those who find facial hair bothersome.
- It is not recommended for individuals with active acne, rosacea, or highly sensitive skin, as the procedure can potentially irritate the skin.
Contraindications
- Active Acne: Dermaplaning can irritate inflamed skin and spread bacteria, worsening acne.
- Rosacea or Eczema: These skin conditions make the skin more sensitive and prone to irritation or redness after dermaplaning.
- Psoriasis: The scraping action may exacerbate flare-ups or irritate already sensitive areas.
- Open Wounds or Cuts: Areas with open wounds, sores, or healing skin should not be treated.
- Sunburn: Sunburned skin is already damaged and sensitive, making it unsuitable for dermaplaning.
- Active Skin Infections: Conditions like cold sores (herpes simplex) or bacterial infections should be resolved before treatment to avoid spreading the infection.
- Uncontrolled Diabetes: Individuals with poorly managed diabetes may have a higher risk of infection and slower healing.
- Blood-Thinning Medications: Medications like aspirin or anticoagulants may increase the risk of cuts or bleeding during the procedure.
- Recent Chemical Peels or Laser Treatments: The skin needs time to recover after aggressive treatments. Wait at least 1–2 weeks before dermaplaning, or follow your dermatologist’s guidance.
- Severe Hyperpigmentation or Dark Spots: While dermaplaning can improve some pigmentation, it might irritate already dark spots or scars, potentially making them worse in rare cases.
- Keloid or Hypertrophic Scarring History: Individuals prone to keloid formation may want to avoid dermaplaning, as any irritation to the skin can potentially trigger scar formation.
- Highly Sensitive Skin: If your skin reacts negatively to most products or treatments, dermaplaning might not be suitable.
- Pregnancy or Hormonal Skin Sensitivity: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make the skin more sensitive, increasing the risk of irritation.
