Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in your body, especially found in the skin, eyes, and connective tissues. It’s a humectant, which means it attracts and holds onto water — kind of like a sponge — which helps keep things hydrated and plump.

In skincare:

It’s super popular in products like serums, moisturizers, and sheet masks because it can:

  • Hold up to 1000 times its weight in water
  • Make skin look smoother and more hydrated
  • Temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines

Main Uses of Hyaluronic Acid in Skincare

  1. Hydration
    • HA pulls moisture from the air and deeper skin layers to the surface.
    • It helps keep skin soft, plump, and dewy.
    • Ideal for all skin types, even oily or acne-prone skin.
  1. Plumping & Smoothing Fine Lines
    • Hydrated skin = smoother skin.
    • HA helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (especially temporary ones caused by dryness).
  1. Barrier Repair & Skin Health
    • It supports the skin’s natural moisture barrier, preventing trans epidermal water loss.
    • This keeps irritants out and moisture in, helping sensitive or compromised skin.
  1. Soothing & Calming
    • It has gentle, non-irritating properties.
    • Great for post-treatment recovery (like after a facial, microneedling, or chemical peel).
  1. Boosts Effectiveness of Other Products
    • When used correctly (usually applied on damp skin), it can enhance the absorption and performance of other skincare ingredients.

PRODUCTS THAT CONTAIN HYALURONIC ACID

  • Serums – usually the most potent form.
  • Moisturizers – locks in hydration.
  • Toners/Essences – adds a hydration step early in your routine.
  • Sheet Masks – intense hydration boost.
  • Eye creams – helps plump and smooth under the eye

Precautions When Using Hyaluronic Acid in Skincare

  1. Apply to Damp Skin
    • HA needs moisture to work — if you apply it to dry skin in a dry environment, it might pull water from deeper layers of your skin, leaving it dehydrated.
    • ✅ Solution: Spritz a facial mist or apply right after cleansing (when your skin is still damp), then seal it with a moisturizer.
  1. Seal It In
    • HA is a humectant — it pulls in water, but doesn’t keep it there by itself.
    • ✅ Use a moisturizer or facial oil after HA to lock in hydration.
  1. Watch for Overuse
    • Using too much HA or layering multiple HA products can sometimes lead to tightness, dryness, or irritation — especially if you’re in a dry climate.
    • ✅ Use it once or twice a day (usually enough for most people).
  1. Be Cautious Post-Procedure
    • After treatments like microneedling or laser, pure HA is often recommended, but skip products with fragrance, alcohol, or actives that could irritate healing skin.
    • ✅ Go for a clean, basic HA serum post-treatment if your skin pro suggests it.
  1. Check the Formula
    • Not all HA products are created equal — some contain added fragrances, essential oils, or alcohols that can be irritating.
    • ✅ Look for “fragrance-free” or “sensitive-skin safe” if your skin is reactive

Possible Side Effects (Rare)

  • Mild irritation or allergic reaction (redness, itching)
  • More common with injectable HA (like fillers), not topical
  • If it happens topically, discontinue use and do a patch test next time
